![]() 'This UFO-look-alike cloud appeared and vanished within about three minutes at 20:36 on 27 November 2009. I snapped it on the south coast of Wellington, with my camera pointing in a south-westerly direction. The Kaikoura Mountains of the South Island can be seen faintly in the distance. Camera settings: TV: 1/100sec, AV: 5.3, F-Stop: 6.3, ISO: 200. Kind regards,
Fritz Schöne.'

![]() Stefan wrote 'While waiting for some uncooperative cirrus clouds to make a circumhorizontal arc, I noticed a solar corona. These have some similarities to iridescent cloud which is common in altocumulus, cirrocumulus cloud cover. I find it quite hard to image, due to the best colors occurring close to or around the sun. My advice to anyone wanting to see a display like this is to always wear sunglasses and shelter yourself behind an object like a pole or a building.' Stefan's photograph was taken at 12:51 on Saturday 5 December 2009. For a photograph showing both a corona and iridescent effects see link here. A description of how coronae form can be found here. ![]() Scott wrote 'formations of mammatus over Blenheim, taken 14:00 on 27 November 2009. A deep low to the southeast of the south island with an approaching front up the south island. The mammatus first appeared to the south and then moved to the north, lasting about 90 minutes before dissipating. Very amazing to see perfectly formed clouds. Photos taken on Canon 1D mark 2 16-35mm lens. Cheers, Scott Hammond. Scott sent us a total of four photographs and we intend to show some more of these later. Mammatus is James' favourite cloud type. ![]() 'Hi James,
This was taken as we were flying from Wellington to Whakatane at 19:30 on 17 November 2009. We were at 21,000 feet in a layer of ice crystal cloud. This was the view from the front window. Taken on a Sony Cybershot.
Cliff Stockwell.' This excellent photograph shows a 22° halo. Sun dogs to the left and right and a lower sun pillar. Compare this to the HaloSim simulation shown at this link. (JMcG) Photo of the Day - Saturday 5 December 2009

Laurie wrote 'the shot is taken to the west, shortly after sunrise. We were expecting snow, which I think we got, although it has since gotten warmer and melted. I was using my small pocket digital camera with a shutter speed of 1/125 at f/4.'
