Photo of the Day - Thursday 15 April 2010 Kevin Jackson Hi James, with a trough passing over the South Island on the afternoon on 24 March 2010, conditions were good for Cb development in the Dunedin area. I have attached a group of three photos taken about 7 minutes apart, the first being at 15:50, the third (shown here) at 16:04. The view is looking northeast from Fairfield towards the southern environs of the city. Winds at all levels were from the westerly quarter, so the cloud is moving slightly towards the right of frame. The development of the 'anvil' on the cumulus tower on the left is shown merging with an earlier anvil on the right of the picture. The picture shown here shows the merge complete, and appearing as one large anvil. The Cb cell (struggled) to produce only clap of thunder. Camera is Fuji Finepix S5700 on auto. I check your site at least once daily. The photographs are definitely a highlight and are a valuable addition' wrote Kevin. On checking later, I found this propellor vortice making this photo of the rare Lavochkin La-9 fighter plane even more unique.' Photo of the Day - Friday 9 April 2010 Bronwyn Kirby (12 years old) This photograph was sent in by Pete Kirby, he wrote 'shot by Bronwyn, one of the Balloons Over Waikato festival photographers. Bronwyn captured both her balloon shadow with a halo in the fog and another balloon and its shadow near Horsham Downs, north Hamilton. Bronwyn used a five year old Panasonic FZ30, Iso80, 1/400sec, F5.6. Photo was taken at 09:00 on 28 March 2010.' This beautifully composed photograph shows a very fine example of a glory. Glories form directly opposite to the sun and are centred on the antisolar point. They are caused by the backscattering of sunlight by small water droplets in clouds or fogs. Glories can often be seen from above the clouds around the shadow of aeroplanes. Glories can also be seen in lower lying fog or mist from the tops of mountains or mountain ridges.
