PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 29 November 2005
Apologies for the time taken to renew the Photograph of the Week. Pressure of work, marking exams etc. etc. We hope you
agree that these new photographs have been worth the wait.

'Love your site, keep up the good work. Took this shot from the front yard (Newmarket, Auckland) last night (27 November 2005)' wrote Jim.

A group of us climbed Mt Hikurangi last Friday/Saturday (28/29 Octeber 2005). Managed to get up
for the sun rise on Saturday morning. Taken at 1000m asl looking generally
eastward!

'Hiya, took these last night (21st November 2005) around 21:00 as the Southerly front came through Wellington.
The picture is shot from Seatoun Heights looking towards Melrose across Lyall Bay and back through Melrose and Brooklyn
PS Love the site, addict....' wrote Ian.

'...... I have now managed to capture some (mammatus) photo's of my own. We were down in Orari - near Geraldine in South Canterbury camping
on the 12 November 2005 when a thunder storm came by. As it was leaving my husband looked up and noticed these mammatus clouds.
So thought I would send them into you.', wrote Dawn.

'I am a regular user of MetVUW.com as I am a Hydrologist for Horizons Regional Council based in Palmerston North - a job very much
dependant on what the Region's Weather is up to! I have been very impressed with the photographs of the week sent in by people,
and I'd like to share some shots of very unusual formations I shot tonight.
These formations were captured between 20:15 and 20:45pm on Sunday 27 November 2005 looking toward the South over Palmerston North city.
The two photos are in sequence as the sun began to set beaming its colourful rays through the cloud.
Thank you for your continued reports and articles on your site' wrote Cameron.

Bill Slater
Following the selection of Ron Court's photograph for our photo of the week on 1 November 2005, we received the following email from Bill Slater.
We have decided to reproduce Bill's email in its entirety.
'I am a UK citizen and was lucky enough to visit the South island of NZ
in February/March this year. I got married in Christchurch then toured
with my wife on a motorcycle.
Save for our wedding the most fabulous event was that sky view just
posted on your web site by Ron Court.
I must have been shoulder to shoulder with Ron as I have an almost
identical picture.
I was so stunned that such a sky could exist, quite unlike anything I
have ever seen. It truly made our honeymoon.
So on return to UK I mailed the picture to the BBC who showed it on the
evening weather and also put it on the website.
I also E-mailed New Zealand MetService where Bob McDavitt kindly
entered it in the Meteorological Society's annual weather photo competition.
It won, and I am now a proud member of the Meteorological Society for 3 years.
I have attached 6 photos (we show two here) culminating in the shot, shown below, which is comparable with Ron
Courts'.
Bill Slater
'We were travelling through the Lewis pass towards Hanmer when my wife
Pat commented that the near clear sky was being invaded by flying
saucers! I now know these to be altocumulus lenticularis. (I'm a UK Cop
not a met man so if I spelt that wrong I'm sorry!) Then as we reached
Hamner we turned around and looked at the weather following us. We
reached our motel in time as a strong Southerly was whipping up, but
became amazed at the pendulus formations almost falling out of the sky.
There was never any precipitation that night, but the sky developed and
the colours richened. Also the cloud formed ripples as if trapped behind
one another. Finally as the sun faded down the clear sky to the North
lightened the underside of the clouds. We went to dinner in total awe at
the sight we had enjoyed for about two hours.
We are coming back in 2010 (loaded with cameras).
Bob McDavitt has sent me an explanation including the Canterbury Arch
phenomenon, and he just E-mailed me today to point out Ron Courts'
photo. All the memories came rushing back. Not only do you have a great
country, but great weather events to entertain your visitors.
I now have your web site on my favourites and will visit it to 'top up'
on NZ weather when I need a pick me up.'
Congratulations on winning the Meteorological Society competition Bill and many thanks for sharing your happy memories
and wonderful photographs
with us.
