PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 31 July 2007
Apologies for the delay in updating the Photograph of the Week feature, I have been overseas on leave (USA, UK
and a very interesting visit chasing up maternal family roots in Estonia). Since returning to New Zealand there has been
a million and one jobs to catch up on.
Whilst overseas I was able to check the MetVUW site regularly, as well as NZ coverage our forecasts also cover
many other regions
including USA, UK and Estonia. The forecasts for these countries were very reliable and accurate
though not always what I wanted to see - had some heavy rain in the West of Scotland, though I did manage to miss the
worst of the weather including the floods in the UK.
WiFi coverage in Estonia was excellent with lots of free public hotspots around the country. I had hoped to update the Photo of the Week feature while in Estonia
but just too much to see and do.
During the past couple of months I have received
some fantastic photographs including two stunning photos from John O'Malley which
have been chosen as our Photographs of the Week.
John recommends a favourite web site of ours (which we have recommended several times in the past).
It really is an excellent site and well worth a visit. The various arcs
shown in John's photos are most usually seen in very cold places such as Antarctica. I personally have never seen such a
fantastic display of haloes and arcs
and would be delighted to receive any similar photographs or reports of such sightings in New Zealand.
John O'Malley
John wrote 'I was skiing at Porters skifield last weekend (14-15 July 2007) and saw some ice halos around
the sun as it appeared over the edge of an adjacent mountain ridge - I have
attached a couple of images which you might find interesting. The air
temperature was below zero at the time and there was quite a lot of fine ice
mist drifting over the skifield from the snow making machines - I assume it
was these ice crystals causing the halos.
At the time I didn't have much idea of what I was looking at. However a
browse through the website www.atoptics.co.uk showed what I saw was a 22° halo with a sundog on the right hand edge (with a parhelic circle
line passing through?), an upper tangent arc above this and a suncave and Parry
arc sitting on top. I don't know how often these types of halos are seen in
NZ - its certainly the first time I have seen anything like them.'
Brilliant photos John - you made my day when you sent me these.

A moment later we we ingulfed with clouds and nearly lost our way.

'Hi James,
I certainly appreciate being able to click on your site to see what's due on the weather front.
Here's a shot that was snapped on Tuesday 17 July 2007 through the fog about 10 kilometres east of Te Anau.
We've had hard (for here) frosts for the past two weeks and no running water over the same period!'

Maddy wrote 'Kia ora,
I took this shot on a recent trip to the West Coast. This stunning rainbow came out over the cement works near Cape Foulwind
near Westport. It was taken on an Olympus 770sw. I really enjoy looking at all the photos on your site so thought you might
like to see this one. As a Ski Patroller I find your website really helpful, keep up the great work.'
Jym O'Neill
'Hi James,
Attached is a photo I snapped Wednesday 27 June 2007 out the back of Ranfurly on a typical Central Otago Winter's day.
I got a couple of comments from the guys at work suggesting I flick it to you.
Hope you enjoy it.'

Ruth Kilkelly
'Thought you might like to see a beautiful photo of the hoar frost on the No.1 hole of the Omakau golf course.
This photo was taken on Wednesday 18 July 2007, the first day we had seen the sun for a week. Some of us played golf
the day before in cloudy and foggy conditions with the temperature -5.5°C when we teed off at 11:00.
Cheers
Ruth Kilkelly'
Many thanks to Ruth and Jym, I love these photographs of hoar frost. I really must take a trip down to Central Otago to see some of this beautiful scenery.
I used to see lots of rime when I was helping build a remote
weather station on top of Cairngorm, Scotland run by Heriot-Watt University in the late 70s (bye the way there is still a remote weather
station on top of the mountain, check here).
For a description of frost and rime see Wikipedia entries.

'We have enjoyed the weather info and pictures of New Zealand you provide. We have sailed almost half way around the world to get to
New Zealand and have enjoyed
every minute we have spent here. Took this picture Saturday morning 21 July 2007 here in Whangarei.
This is looking across the Hatea River at Whangarei's Town Basin, it started to rain about 3 minutes after the shot.
Sincerely, Bill and Yvonne Carver,
Windsong'

Jason wrote 'There have been some awesome skies around here (Motueka) this winter.
Photo above taken from Motueka River on 17 May 2007, looking WNW, sunset. The same week of west-souwest weather. Awesome lenticulars huh!!
Photo below from Kumaras Beach, Motueka on 21 June 2007 during the big cold snap we had recently.
At the time these were taken it was westerly, going round to the SW as I recall. We had just had a
fast moving thunderstorm pass over heading east, and then the sun poked in under the cloud just before
sunset, and highlighted this incredible display. Mammatus from a storm which in these photos is into Cook Strait.
All taken on my Sony Cybershot (5 megapixel). Hope you like!'
